End Of Year Letter to my Patients and my Friends

Dear Friends,

As the end of the year approaches, I hope this letter finds you well, in good health and a positive spirit.

In your recent emails or SMS, I read about your many concerns and questions about how to best care for the skin of your face. You all have been on my mind. And as the year ends, I must tell you that there is no one thing that I would like most than coach you about how to best care for your skin and make sure your skin looks its very best!

First and foremost, regardless of age, it is important to take care of your skin with a regular skin care regimen. This should include, at a minimum, the use of an SPF sunscreen, along with a vitamin C serum or cream every single day. Doing so will protect your skin from sun damage while also boosting collagen production for a youthful complexion. Furthermore, it is essential to maintain hydration through drinking plenty of water, refrain from cigarette smoking, avoiding alcohol and refined sugar. You should be using a good moisturizer with Peptides in the form of biopeptides; stem cells can also help to improve your skin texture, while nicotinamide can reduce discoloration. Including prebiotics and probiotics in your daily diet will also go a long way for optimizing your skin health and skin radiance.

For those in their 30s, add retinoids to your evening skin care routine. Retinoids will do everything anti-aging for your skin; It will exfoliate, it will increase collagen production and thicken the dermis. So if you have issues with fine lines or thinning of your skin, you can improve them with retinoids.

If you are going to use retinoids, spot test it first. See how your skin is tolerating it. If after using the retinoids, you start getting some redness and dryness that you don’t like, then slow down on it. Start slow, like once a week, to avoid skin irritations, and work your way up as tolerated to ensure that your skin does not get too irritated. Stop using retinoids at once if your skin cannot tolerate them (get too irritated). Talk to your skin specialist, plastic surgeon or dermatologist before you start using retinoids and for guidance. Also talk to them if you have any question about how and when to use retinoids. Remember if you’re pregnant, planning to be pregnant or if you are breastfeeding – Retinoids are absolutely contraindicated in this setting, and should be discussed with your gynecologist.

If you are in your 40s, consult a skin care specialist, plastic surgeon or dermatologist about upgrading your skin care regimen. Depending on the quality of your skin or any skin conditions you may have, you can consider other procedures, options, or treatments. Red light treatments, Botox or laser in the office to fade away dark spots and correct or slow your fine lines and wrinkles are great options. For your information, we just acquired an Areolase laser, which is considered safe for all skin types including skin of color. We also have a new top of the line red light machine for promoting skin rejuvenation and maintaining acne clearance.

At 50 and above, use additional collagen-boosting ingredients, and upgrade your moisturizer to a heavier one that contains ceramide, hyaluronic acid, or dimethicone. Use infrared or red light for skin rejuvenation. Depending on your needs, you may also consider other surgical options in the form of facelift or mini-facelift to promote a more youthful appearance. In whichever geographical location you are, be aware of questions and issues arising about anti-aging treatments like radiofrequency, liquid facelift, and thread lift. So, stay in touch and stay updated before selecting a treatment.

Above all else, lifestyle choices play an important role in skin health and radiance. Drink plenty of water, get adequate sleep and physical exercise, walk outdoors, eat nutritious whole foods, and avoid processed foods. Also avoid cigarette smoking, alcohol and refined sugars. Remember to try to stay out of direct sun rays as much as possible.

I hope these tips are helpful in your pursuit of radiant, glowy and younger looking skin!
